Large Crowd Comes Out for Greenwood Flying Monkeys’ Home Opener
GREENWOOD, S.C. — Around 1,000 fans came out to Legion Field on Friday night for the Greenwood Flying Monkeys’ home opener, helping welcome summer collegiate baseball back to one of the region’s historic ballparks.
The strong crowd gave the Flying Monkeys a memorable first night at home, as Greenwood picked up its first-ever win in front of a lively Legion Field audience.
The Flying Monkeys and the Blue Ridge League thank Greenwood and the Lakelands for showing out and helping make the club’s home debut a special night.
One thing is already clear: Greenwood is a great baseball community, and the Flying Monkeys are just getting started.
It was also a strong weekend on the field across the Blue Ridge League.
On Friday night, the Queen City Corndogs went on the road and defeated the Coastal Plain League’s High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms, 7-3. The Carolina Disco Turkeys also picked up a road win Friday, beating the Mooresville Spinners, 12-6.
The Joanna Hornets added another notable moment Sunday night, opening their home season with a win over the Flying Monkeys at Presbyterian College.
The weekend marked another early sign of momentum for the Blue Ridge League, with strong crowds, competitive games and new communities beginning to build their own summer baseball traditions.
